The ageing microbiota

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the European region is ageing rapidly. Its average age is already the highest in the world and the proportion of people aged 65 and over is forecast to rise from 14% in 2010 to 25% in 2050.

But what happens to our gut microbiota as we age and what does this mean for public health?

Dr Gemma Walton, one of the researcher’s behind the University of Reading’s Gut Lab, takes us through what we know now, how this could be used to reverse changes and what public health savings that might hold.
