Dr. Arthur Ouwehand is R&D group manager at Active Nutrition in Kantvik, DuPont Nutrition & Health, Finland. He has a research background in both academia and industry. His main interest is on functional foods; in particular probiotics and prebiotics and their influence on the intestinal microbiota composition and activity. He is active in the International Life Sciences Institute Europe, the International Dairy Federation, the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics and the International Probiotic Association (both it’s global and European sections).
Dr. Ouwehand received his M.Sc. degree (1992) in cell biology from Wageningen University (the Netherlands) and his Ph.D. degree (1996) in microbiology from Göteborg University (Sweden). In 1999 he was appointed Adjunct Professor in Applied Microbiology at the University of Turku (Finland); since 2004 he has been working for Danisco; now DuPont Nutrition and Health. Dr. Ouwehand is the author of more than 250 journal articles and book chapters; he is the editor of three books on lactic acid bacteria and the intestinal microbiota and co-inventor on 13 approved patents.View more

Bart Degeest was born in 1971 in Belgium. He graduated from Brussels’ university in 1995 with a Masters in bio-engineering. In 2001, he obtained his PhD in Applied Biological Sciences. During his PhD studies, he was involved in several European projects, focusing mainly on research of lactic acid bacteria. In 2001, he started working for Yakult in the science department.
Today he is Managing Director of Yakult Belgium and Luxemburg, actively involved with regulatory issues at a European level. Bart was involved right from the beginning in setting up IPA Europe and is chairing the outreach committee.
Dr. Gemma E Walton

Dr Gemma Walton is a lecturer in metagenomics at the University of Reading in the UK with a decade of research experience in food and pharmacy.
Gemma has a PhD in gut bacteria and bowel cancer links and has conducted many human intervention studies looking at how functional and novel foods can influence our microbiota.
She has worked alongside Professor Glenn Gibson in Reading’s Gut Lab, a project that seeks to model the microbiology of digestion.

Chemical engineer from Montpellier, Nicolas completed his studies with a PhD in organic and polymer sciences followed by a postdoctoral scholarship on synthesis of copolymers as specific transportation vector for drugs in the body.
At Capsugel he started as research engineer and evolved in different departments from formulation, to Licaps liquid filled capsules production and now as Business development manager. During his career Nicolas was the author of several articles and filed patents in gelatin composition, pharmaceutical formulation and dietary supplement products.

Marina Ponomareva is Senior Regulatory Expert of EAS Strategies, Russia & CIS. Marina specializes in food law and safety regulation of various product categories in the Eurasian Economic Union and its member states. Marina holds a degree in biophysics from Moscow State Medical University. She has an extensive regulatory background, having worked for the government consumer protection agency for a number of years and, most recently, as an executive director of the Russian Council of Dietary Supplement Producers.
